 10 Major Multipurpose Projects of India.


  • Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru said temple of modern India is the "multipurpose projects". With the help of three projects irrigation, Flood control, Work like drinking water supply, hydroelectric production, canal transport and tourisms like work can be completed.
1-Damodar Valley project: (in Jharkhand and West Bengal)
  • It is the first multipurpose project of Independent India. Outline of this project was based on the Tennessee Valley authority of the USA.
  • Damodar valley corporation was established in 1948 under this Tilaiya, Konor, Mathon, Panchet dam have been made.
  • Maithan, Belpahari and Tilaiya dams are built on the Barakar river.
2-Bhakra Nangal project: It is largest project of India. Which is built on Sutlej River in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
  • Bhakra dam is the world's highest gravitational dam(226m). Govind Sagar lake is behind it.
Common area of Bhakra Nangal dam is Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan.


3-Rihand dam project: Rihand dam is also known as Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar and is across Rihand, which is a tributary of Son. It is located in the Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh which lies near the border of UP and MP.


4-Hirakund Dam: Hirakund is longest eastern dam in the world and stands across the mighty river, Mahanadi in Sambhalpur region of Odisha. It was the first major multipurpose river valley project after India's Independent and its construction begin in 1948 and finish in 1956-57.


5-Beas Project: It is construction project of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. Its construction is at the confluence of Sutlej and Beas and Harike barrage has been built. This is the place from where Indira Gandhi canal came out which is longest canal in the world and is fully paved and covered.




6-Gandak project: This project completed in collaboration with Nepal. In this main barrage derived from Balmiki Nagar barrage which is constructed on Gandak river.
7-Narmada Valley project: Narmada is the fifth major river in India.
  • Construction of Sardar sarovar project of Narmada River in Gujrat state has been done. From ths project, Gujrat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra states benifit, Indira sagar dam in Madhya Pradesh is built near Narmada nagar.
  • Tawa, Barno, Kolor, Sukta and Matiyari in Narmada valley projects has been built.
  • Maan project on Maan river, a tributary of Narmada, Chandrasekhar project on Hathni river and upper Veda project on Veda River has been constructed.

8- Dam Constructed on Kaveri River: Located on the Kaveri River in Karnataka. India's second oldest hydroelectric production plant is started in Sivasamudram in 1902. Krishna Sagar dam is situated on Kaveri River of Karnataka. 

9-Nagarjuna Sagar Dam: It is the masonry dam across the Krishna River in Nagarjuna Sagar which straddles the border between Gantur district of Andhra Pradesh Nalgonda District of Telangana.



10-Tehri dam project: The Tehri dam is the highest dam in the India and one of the highest in world. It is multipurpose rock and earth fill embankment dam on the Bhagirathi River near Tehri in Uttarakhand India.
